When you run that Go program with the counter, something interesting happens under the hood. The count variable starts its life inside the createCounter function. Yet, the inner function that increments it keeps getting called and remembers the value. For count to be available each time we call counter(), it cannot live on the stack of createCounter because that stack frame is gone after the function returns. So, it moves. It “escapes” to the heap. The compiler’s escape analysis makes this decision. Let’s look at some practical ways to work with this system.
A great first step is simply asking the compiler to explain its choices. You can use a build flag to see a report. Try running go build -gcflags="-m" on your code. The -m flag prints the compiler’s escape analysis decisions. Adding more ms, like -gcflags="-m -m", makes the output more detailed. This report will show you lines like moved to heap: count. It’s your direct insight into what the compiler is thinking, and it’s the fastest way to identify surprises.
Closures, like our counter example, are a common source of escapes. The rule is straightforward: if a function you define inside another function uses a variable from that outer scope, and the inner function itself outlives the outer one (because you return it or pass it elsewhere), then the captured variable must live on the heap. It needs to exist for as long as the closure does. This isn’t bad; it’s necessary for the code to work correctly. Just be aware that creating many long-lived closures with captured variables will increase heap activity.
Passing pointers up and out of functions is another clear signal for the heap. Look at this function:

Here, u is created locally. But by returning &u, we’re giving the caller a reference to it. The local stack frame for getUser will be destroyed, so u cannot safely live there. The compiler moves u to the heap so the returned pointer remains valid. Conversely, if you pass a large struct by value to a function, it gets copied onto the stack, and no escape occurs. The choice between pointer and value isn’t just about semantics; it directly informs allocation.
Interfaces introduce a layer of uncertainty for the compiler. When you assign a concrete value to an interface variable, the compiler might decide to allocate that value on the heap. Why? Because the exact type is determined at runtime. The compiler takes a conservative approach to ensure correctness. For instance:

Even though rover is used right away and doesn’t seem to escape the function, the act of storing it in the Speaker interface variable s can trigger a heap allocation. In very tight loops where performance is critical, avoiding interfaces in favor of concrete types can sometimes reduce allocation pressure.
Data structures like slices and maps have their own rules. When you store pointers (or things containing pointers) in them, those referenced values may need to be on the heap. Consider building a slice of pointers:

The variable value is created anew in each loop iteration. Because we take its address and store that address in a slice that outlives the loop, each value must be allocated on the heap. If instead we stored integers directly ([]int), no escape would happen—just a slice of copied values.
So, what can you do if you see unwanted allocations? One effective technique is pre-allocation and reuse. If you know the final size of a slice, allocate it with the correct capacity upfront using make. This prevents repeated backing array reallocations and copies during append operations. For frequently created and discarded objects, consider a sync.Pool. A Pool holds a temporary collection of items you can get and put back, amortizing the cost of heap allocation.

Finally, it’s vital to measure. Go’s tooling is superb for this. Write benchmarks.

The overarching idea isn’t to fear heap allocation but to understand it. Most of the time, the compiler’s decisions are exactly what you need. But in those hot paths—tight loops, core data processing functions—knowing these patterns helps you write code that collaborates with the memory model. You write software that is not only correct but also efficiently uses resources, which is the quiet goal of any solid Go program.
